I get an error from the configure script on Mac OS X!

This is because OS X uses Z shell for /bin/sh. This will hopefully be fixed in a future release of automake (it is not caused by Gromacs), but in the meantime you can install bash (if you don't already have it) and use the command '/bin/bash ./configure' (Your bash location might be different from /bin/bash).
