I get an error involving -llanginfo when linking on OS X.

This isn't a Gromacs problem. You have probably installed a version of g77 (or perhaps gcc?) that corrupts your system (for example the version from dryden.biol.yorku.ca - DON'T USE IT!). Unfortunately you might have to do some major rescue work with your system if you already installed this.
